Personal Museum Series 5: Measuring
the Size of the Sea Storing in a Library
New York (Ottendorfer
Branch Public Library), 2008-5-1 to 11, Concept and Performance

Do you believe there is a sea storing inside the
library? Through this artwork, I found out a sea in the library and try to measure
its size. Let’s see how to do it! I stayed in a library for few days. I read
every books storing in it. If the book with a-whole-page of sea on the cover or
inner page, I will borrow that book. Therefore, I collected all the books with
sea. And then, I linked up every horizon of the books until they formed a shape
of sea. The concept of this artwork is about our imagination on “one” sea. When
we are looking at the “end” of the sea, wherever you are, what you see and what
you feel is same. This artwork was done in the Ottendorfer Branch Public Library, New York. Its collection
is almost 6000. I collected 68 books with a-whole-page of sea.

New York
(Public Libraries), 2007-11-24 to present, Concept and Performance

“Norwegian Wood” is a project to plant a
tree in the public libraries of New
York. Last year, I traveled in Norway. I
picked up several leaves form the Norwegian wood. When I came back to New York, I found there has 21 books called “Norwegian
Wood” (by Haruki Murakami) in all the New
York public libraries. Then I borrowed the book “Norwegian
Wood” form libraries one by one. Then I put the leaves from the Norwegian wood
to one page randomly. I followed the shape of the leaf to cut off a “leaf” form
that page, and then I embedded the leaf into the book. At last, all the “leaves”
form the books “Norwegian Wood” were thrown back to the wood in Norway.
A person borrows the “Norwegian Wood” form
a library. While he is reading the book, he saw a leaf. The shape of the leaf
is the missing text of the book. When he is imagining the missing text, the
shape of his thinking is connected to the leaf that is flowing in the wood in Norway. His thought
stops in far away. Everyone who reads the “Norwegian Wood” will remember a leaf
in his or her mind. After a long, long time, many and many people read the books.
Their imagination and memory will grow up a tree, and then a wood in the city.
Slowly and silently…
