Pak's interest lies in the possibilities of discovering extraordinarily profound and insightful messages encoded within the most unlikely and ordinary places and objects. He draws elements from everyday life and its surroundings in order to rediscover ‘meanings’ that are often missed or even ignored by most of us. In realising his witty and poetic ideas and thoughts through self-reflective and philosophical gestures, Pak goes beyond meditating on the legitimisation of his seemingly random acts as contemporary art, to successfully blur the boundaries between the personal and the political. Defying the aspects of physicality and spirituality, Pak creates and enables new ways of looking with poignant resonance into unwritten codes and complexities that exist within contemporary societies.

4LIFELINES:WITHOUTYOU/ WITHYOU/ WITHOUTYOU
Guangzhou, 2009-1-17, Chalk Painting

I found the lifelines of four deceased people at Hong Kong's Diamond Hill Cemetery on August 23rd, 2008. Their lifelines are symbolised by the four parallel chalk lines on ground. The first three lines derive from the same family: the son lived within the life of the mother, and the mother lived within the life of the father.

Personal Museum Series 5: Measuring the Size of the Sea Storing in a Library

New York (Ottendorfer Branch Public Library), 2008-5-1 to 11, Concept and Performance

Do you believe there is a sea storing inside the library? Through this artwork, I found out a sea in the library and try to measure its size. Let’s see how to do it! I stayed in a library for few days. I read every books storing in it. If the book with a-whole-page of sea on the cover or inner page, I will borrow that book. Therefore, I collected all the books with sea. And then, I linked up every horizon of the books until they formed a shape of sea. The concept of this artwork is about our imagination on “one” sea. When we are looking at the “end” of the sea, wherever you are, what you see and what you feel is same. This artwork was done in the Ottendorfer Branch Public Library, New York. Its collection is almost 6000. I collected 68 books with a-whole-page of sea.

Ottendorfer Branch Library, 135 Second Avenue at E 8th Street, New York,逢星期日休息。

New York (Public Libraries), 2007-11-24 to present, Concept and Performance

“Norwegian Wood” is a project to plant a tree in the public libraries of New York. Last year, I traveled in Norway. I picked up several leaves form the Norwegian wood. When I came back to New York, I found there has 21 books called “Norwegian Wood” (by Haruki Murakami) in all the New York public libraries. Then I borrowed the book “Norwegian Wood” form libraries one by one. Then I put the leaves from the Norwegian wood to one page randomly. I followed the shape of the leaf to cut off a “leaf” form that page, and then I embedded the leaf into the book. At last, all the “leaves” form the books “Norwegian Wood” were thrown back to the wood in Norway.

A person borrows the “Norwegian Wood” form a library. While he is reading the book, he saw a leaf. The shape of the leaf is the missing text of the book. When he is imagining the missing text, the shape of his thinking is connected to the leaf that is flowing in the wood in Norway. His thought stops in far away. Everyone who reads the “Norwegian Wood” will remember a leaf in his or her mind. After a long, long time, many and many people read the books. Their imagination and memory will grow up a tree, and then a wood in the city. Slowly and silently…

New York, 2007-6-30 to 2008-6-25, Graffiti

A Travel Without Visual Experience

I joined a 5-day/4-nights tour group to Malaysia, a country that I had never been before. From Hong Kong to Malaysia then back to Hong Kong, I either closed or covered up my eyes (in order to pretend that I was blind) for the entire journey. During the trip, I was still doing all the sightseeing and took many photos, but instead of seeing, I only used my body to sense and experience my surroundings. These photographs enabled my “future” eyes to view the documented foreign landscapes at a later stage. My images, along with photography and videos from other members of the tour group, became the sole reference of my indirect memories and visual experience for Malaysia. I will possibly never step foot into Malaysia again.

In an effort to present my experience as a blind traveler taking photographs, I have set up a completely darkened room to showcase a selection of the photographs (5 rolls) taken in Malaysia. Viewers are required to bring their own cameras in order to capture images inside the room for later viewing outside. I hope you can feel a sense of what A Travel Without Visual Experience is about through this deliberate setting. The background audio was recorded during my trip and later edited and mastered by Ma Chi Hang. Please visit www.invisibletravel.blogspot.com for more information about A Trip Without Visual Sensation.

Please enter to experience my world without sight!----Pak Shueng Chuen

You Never See a Square!   Italy, 2008-10-23, Concept

A square is defined as having all sides equal in length, and its interior angels are all at 90 degrees. Their shape though does in fact change according to one’s vantage point of the angels. So, in reality, our eyes have never actually "seen" a real square, as it can only appear in our imagination.

“( ” “)”, Paren   theses T-shirts / Guangzhou, 2009-1-1, T-shirt design   Moon Size: Times New Roman 930

Parentheses consist of one on the left ( and one on the right ) ; they only become whole as a pair. When two persons wear the Parentheses T-shirts simultaneously, they can contain all the persons or items in between them. Visually, parentheses appear to be two crescent moons. In Chinese, the character for moon is “”, one positive ) and one negative ( . By that same logic, )) means a friend, because in Chinese the character for friend is “”, which visually is a double of the character for moon. So ))) indicates many friends. This is a conceptual framework that I have in my mind since a few years ago.

Using the Light of the Waning Moon to Draw a Full Moon / Norway, 2007-9-5, Photography

I took this photograph with long exposure: I aimed the camera at the new moon, and then rotated the camera in a full circle within 1.3 seconds. The light from the new moon was traced as an orbit in the film. After hundreds of attempts, the new moon finally became a full moon.

Beginning

Between 2003 and 2005, I created a series of arts for Ming Pao Hong Kong about newspapers and the life in Hong Kong, thus began my cooperation with the media.  Arts created for media have a very distinct perspective; i.e. there is only one side (the newspaper picture or the TV screen) facing the audience. The activities involved are only the ones concerning the brain and the eyes, and was irrelevant to both the body and the site. My readers might always thoughts I would be someone highly systematic and analytical, but I am actually quite sloppy, in my life, my everyday living, and my work.Days(Days)Nights(Nights) is my creation project in Vitamin Creative Space Guangzhou. I will be living in the exhibition site for a continuous period of time. What’s in the exhibition would not only be the workbut also the creation process.  I always believe that process is the most important part. It includes thinking, mental changes, physical condition, response to the situation...it’s sloppy, but feels more authentic and amiable. The exhibition shows my recent work as well as a bunch which will be created live on the Guangzhou exhibition site. The creation period will last till the morning of 17th January, 2009. The exhibition opens to the public all the while. — PAK SHEUNG CHUEN (TOZER)

New York, 2007-8-14, Charcoal Drawing

(This is reminiscent of a poem by the Chinese poet Gu Cheng: Darkness of the night gave me black eyes / I used it to search for light)

We Are Looking at the Other Side of the Sun    Italy (Turin), 2008-10-23

Coincidentally, the gradient of the road and the river together form a perfect right triangle. I draw a bucket of water from the bottom corner of the triangle and carry it to the vertex of the triangle. At this point, I pour the water into the river. During the act of pouring all the water into the river, the water forms a line that is perpendicular to the river and its length is equal to the side of the triangle.I am merely a small pixel in the film (with a red arrow that indicates my position from time to time). One must concentrate and is best standing behind the white line in order to perceive my in the film.

Hong Kong, 2006-1-5, Performance
